Who's going down?

Added a reply Mar 14

It's nice to know at least 'Boro can't win the league this year. But based on recent form NUFC is finishing 4 points below the drop. Champions League though, eh? Not bad, not bad. Read More »

Who's going down?

My head says the current bottom-3 are doomed. Newcastle's trajectory is interesting (he says, gleefully). Here's a link to the form table - last 8. Newcastle - 2 points Bolton - 8 points Everyon... Read More »

Can't remember what the Times podcast is called (the game?) but it's superb - a thinking man's podcast and I wish it were twice as long (or twice as frequent). Read More »

I’m of the opinion that football - at the highest level - is hopelessly broken. I’m going to be using the Premier League as the primary example here - it’s the one I’m most familiar with and it’s probably as broken as any other league - but I’m sure you could look at other leagues and find a similar story.

Football is broken in two important ways: As a sport, and as a business.

The goal is to cause a bit of outrage, which will hopefully lead to change. Satisfied people don’t drive change - it’s down to the outraged.

On Boro, Blackburn, and Dr. Johnson's Walking Dog

"A woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all." - Samual Johnson

I was reading a Telegraph article on the second coming of Keggy Keegle which included a league table from the day he left, in the middle of the 96-97 season. It's always a little surprising to see some of the teams that…

Redknapp + Newcastle = Nuttier than I thought...

To put it very briefly, I can't think of a more "Big Sam" manager than Harry Redknapp.

  • Lots of Prem experience.
  • Canny about spotting value in under-rated players towards the end of their careers.
  • Able to push small-town teams toward the upper-middle of the table.
  • Little experience with big clubs or superstar players.
  • Look for control and don't appreciate board interferance.

Newcastle would be nuts to offer the job to Redknapp, and…

Oh No, Sepp Blatter is Acting the Fool (Again)

Here's what Sepp has to say about Capello's appointment:

"I would say it is a little surprising that the motherland of football has ignored a sacrosanct law or belief that the national team manager should be from the same country as the players,"

Sepp...it's not even a law, never mind a sacrosanct one.

This would be less noteworthy was it not coming fr…

Question,

How come when I click on Kartik's & Michael James' names it takes me to their dasboards, but I click on yours ad it takes me to your profile? Is it a user priv. thing? Or do they have to be a "friend" to gain access to the profile? Just wondering because I wanted to leave a comment for Kartik, not necessarily type it for everyone to see right away.

Thx,

Jay!

Hey Phil. I'm not completely off the game, yet. There's always the promise of MLS just around the corner. NUFC has only shaken my faith a little. I really thought they would go down 2 years ago after Shearer retired since the obvious groundwork had never been laid for the post-Shearer/Robson era.

At any rate, I've been lurking here and did catch that Boro thread. Hopefully I'll have a blog up today or tomorrow to surmise the last two weeks of gamewatching. I always have that last one or two games to get in before the weekend, and then I never sit down to write them all up. Soon, I promise.

Thx,

Jay!

haha yea, but top of the league is VERY scary though. too many heat attacks. Thank god for my strong heart. No but I just want to see someone new come in. I like when new people come in. Like Eduardo! He was undiscovered, then hes scoring amazing goals!

I agree about the impending implosion. I have made reference to it multiple times on my douche bag site. But they are in serious financial trouble. Gilette and Hicks heaped the full value of their personal debt onto the club. The Credit and Sub prime scandals are killing these two and they can't even show the capital to secure loans. People think Liverpool are going to sign players, but they can't. They are poor. Dirt poor. And when they get 5th because they can't make their defense tighter, there will be no CL money next year.

The Derby that has no clue of what they are doing out on the pitch. The ones that look lost and play like total crap. The Newcastle and Liverpool matches I swear there were different people in Derby shirts.

As a Pompey supporter, this week's Aston Villa tie is going to be my game of the week!!
With a GD of 2 between the teams, this is crucial!!

I'm a bit worried though as Pompey hasn't shown the excitement that they had a few weeks ago, despite not loosing a match for a while...even though their away record is stellar compared to their home one.

Villa don't have Petrov in the line-up but still have a pretty strong team, so I'm predicting a good game for Benjani and Krancjar, and I'd like to see a victory for Pompey, but I got to go with a DRAW as the final.

Now's the time to win the points as in January, many of the team trot off to Africa!!

And as for Harry Redknapp...he's 'Jack The Lad', but a darn good manager, and so I would not be surprised to find out he was involved in something! It's just a shame that now he'll likely not be in the running for the England position. Selfishly, that's good for Pompey - keep him for next year when we hit Europe!!
